Leigh Herndon
Painter; Teacher; Wearable Art
Artist Leigh Herndon:
Leigh creates dyed silk nature-inspired paintings and wearable art
using the silk dyeing process of rozome (Japanese batik). After
earning an MFA in fibers she studied with the rozome expert who
worked with the kimono masters in Japan for many years. The rozome
process utilizes brushed dyeing for shading which differs from
traditional batik which is vat dyed.
Overlaying one transparent dye color over another creates an entirely
new color, so the work is constantly evolving and is created in several
layers. The versatility of hot wax used in creating the designs lends
unique textures to the creations. The fluidity of applying color with
dyes is perfect for interpreting the beauty and mystery
of nature.
For Leigh the design process is a blend of planning, spontaneity, and
experimentation with a great interest in the inter-relationship of edges
of shapes within the designs. Frequently the process begins with a
drawing on the silk and evolves with ideas that occur while working.
She finds inspiration from kayaking trips in the Everglades. Her
feelings about the unique and fragile ecosystem are expressed in her
paintings. Leigh’s award-winning works have been exhibited in
numerous juried national and international shows and in more than 15
states as well as the Smithonian and her work is in several private
collections.
Wearable Art:
LeighArtWear™ wearable art is created from my original dyed silk
Japanese batik paintings. High-resolution imagery of my paintings
is then used in a eco-friendly dye sublimation fabric printing
process to create artist-signed wearable art garments.
Not only is LeighArtWear™ created from my original paintings, it is
made to order one at a time; the fabric is printed, cut, sewn, and
shipped directly to the customer as part of the growing fashion
sustainability movement. We are dedicated to reducing textile
waste while bringing you unique, made-to-order artist-designed
wearable art.
